Care and Entitlement

Personal, Health and Safety Education
Everyone's safety is important to us. The school building has security doors on the building when it is in use. Off site visits are supervised and adequately staffed, regular health and safety checks are carried out and overseen by our Health and Safety Governor. Within the curriculum, children are taught about road safety, home safety and stranger danger. Children are taught the dangers of drugs and medicines and the harm they can do to our bodies. Children are also taught the importance of keeping healthy and eating healthily.
Within the curriculum children are given opportunity to share their feelings and discuss concerns and worries. All members of staff take an interest in the children's welfare and are there to listen. Our motto is Learn Care Enjoy and we see Care as unique part of our school's individuality and uniqueness.
Every child will be given an equal opportunity to experience the curriculum and staff will do this by supporting your child's learning through their teaching.
We will endeavour to make your child happy in school and want their time in school to be enjoyable. Back to top
Governors
Our school governors have overall responsibility for the running of the school and the delivery of your child?s entitlement to education. We have three foundation governors who are drawn from the community of St. Michael's Church, three Local Authority appointed governors, one teacher governor, one support staff governor, five parent governors, one community governor and the Headteacher. On occasions governors posts will become vacant and nominations will be carried out. You may consider this a way of becoming involved in school. Back to top
Links with other agencies
Sometimes health screening will take place in school for eyesight, hearing and dental health. These are routine checks and you will be informed before they happen. Sometimes other visitors will come into school e.g. OFSTED inspectors, LEA advisers, advisory teachers, specialist teachers in speech and language or the community policeman. Schools are a very busy place and visitors are an important part of the administration and functioning of the school. We are proud of the behaviour of children in school encouraging them to be polite and friendly. If a visitor has a particular need to see your child individually, for example for speech development, we will inform you beforehand. Back to top
What your child needs to start at our school
Uniform ? we believe that the school uniform is important in reinforcing a school identify and helping children to relate to each other and take pride in their school. The sweat shirt is red with an embroidered school emblem. White polo tops and black or grey trousers, skirt complete the uniform. School shoes are black.
Children must have a change of clothes for physical activity lessons. They will need a tight fitting top, shorts and tracksuit bottoms/leggings. Children must have a change of footwear and without this change they will not be allowed to participate in physical activity.
There is no jewellery worn in school. Ear studs are acceptable however ear rings will mean children will need to wear plasters over their ears to prevent tearing during PE and games.
All articles of clothing will need to be named and labelled.
All school uniform can be ordered from

Lunchtime arrangements
Children may order a school meal which represents good value. There is a wide selection of menus which include organic sourced foods, vegetarian option, low fat, low salt and high fibre foods. Money will need to be sent in at the beginning of the week in a sealed envelope with the child's name and days they need to stay for lunch. If your child prefers a packed lunch please support us in promoting healthy lifestyles by ensuring they have a suitable drink (not fizzy or carbonated) and a healthy balanced lunch selection. Chocolate, crisps and sweets should only be given on occasions and in small quantities. Back to top
Preparing your child for school
Your role in supporting us in school to teach your child is vital. Help your child be prepared for school and settled by ensuring they have enough sleep. Children become tired especially leading up to holiday times and if they have been under the weather. Lack of sleep or poor sleeping patterns can drastically effect concentration and behaviour.
Help us support your child in becoming independent by teaching them to dress and undress themselves, and to prepare their school bag. Back to top
Productions
Parents are regularly invited to attend performances and share in special assemblies that mark the passing of the school year. We see performing as an important part of a child's life in primary school helping build confidence and developing independence. Back to top
Links with Others
We have links with many institutions in the area and will often arrange visits or visitors to participate in joint collaborative activities. They include:

St Michael's Church -
We walk to church for Michaelmas at the end of September and sometimes hold special services at the church.

Winterbourne Cricket club -
They share our school field and many of our pupils and former pupils play for the team.

The Ridings High School -
We use their sports facilities and regularly attend theatre groups and activity days at the site. Teachers regularly visit us and help to teach the oldest Year 6 pupils.
